Apple has introduced the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4, bringing improved health monitoring, longer battery life, 5G connectivity and new artificial intelligence features to its smartwatch lineup.
Apple Watch Series 12 is designed for everyday health, fitness and communication. Apple Watch Ultra 4 is the more rugged option, offering a larger titanium case, a brighter display, substantially longer battery life, dual-frequency GPS, satellite communication and features designed for outdoor adventures.
Although both watches use the new S11 processor and share many health functions, there are important differences in their size, durability, battery life and price. Here is everything you need to know before choosing between them.
Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 Release Date
Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 will become available on September 18, 2026. Both models can be ordered through Apple before their official release date.
Availability, case materials, colours and supported cellular services may vary between countries. Buyers should check their regional Apple Store for local pricing and delivery dates.

Apple Watch Series 12 Design and Sizes
Apple Watch Series 12 is available in 42mm and 46mm case sizes. Customers can choose from aluminium, titanium and ceramic cases, giving the Series 12 a wider range of designs than the Ultra 4.
Apple describes Series 12 as its thinnest watch so far. Its relatively slim profile should make it comfortable for everyday wear and more convenient for sleep tracking.

Aluminium versions use Ceramic Shield 2 to protect the display. Titanium and ceramic models use a more scratch-resistant sapphire front crystal.
Apple Watch Ultra 4 Design
Apple Watch Ultra 4 is offered in a single 49mm titanium case. Customers can choose between natural and black titanium finishes, along with bands designed for running, hiking, diving and outdoor use.
The Ultra 4 is larger, heavier and more rugged than Series 12. Its raised case helps protect the display and Digital Crown, while the customizable Action button provides quick access to functions such as workouts, waypoints, the flashlight and the emergency siren.
At approximately 63 grams without a band, the Ultra 4 is substantially heavier than an aluminium Series 12. Buyers with smaller wrists may find Series 12 more comfortable, particularly for overnight sleep tracking.
Display Brightness and Visibility
Both watches have wide-angle Always-On Retina displays based on LTPO3 technology. The displays can reduce their refresh rate to 1Hz to conserve power while continuing to show the time and important information.
Apple Watch Series 12 reaches a maximum brightness of 2,000 nits. This should provide good visibility in direct sunlight while remaining suitable for regular indoor use.
Apple Watch Ultra 4 reaches 3,000 nits, making it easier to read in bright outdoor conditions. Its larger screen also provides more space for maps, workout data and complications.
The Ultra 4 therefore offers the better display for outdoor sports and navigation, while Series 12 provides a more compact and discreet design for everyday use.
S11 Processor and 5G Connectivity
Both Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 use Apple’s S11 processor. The chip contains a 64-bit dual-core processor, a four-core Neural Engine and 64GB of storage.
The S11 chip powers the watches’ health calculations, gestures, Siri AI and Audio Intelligence features. It also allows more information to be processed directly on the watch.
The new watches introduce 5G connectivity using technology designed for wearable devices. Series 12 buyers must select a GPS + Cellular model to use cellular features, while cellular connectivity is included with every Ultra 4.
A compatible mobile plan is required to make calls, send messages and stream music without an iPhone nearby. Carrier support and monthly charges vary by country.
New Health Sensing System
Both models have Apple’s redesigned Health Sensing System. It combines updated optical and electrical sensors with larger, more efficient green LEDs to collect heart-rate information more frequently.
Apple says the watches can take background heart-rate readings every five seconds and measure heart rate variability, commonly called HRV, as frequently as every five minutes.

Readiness Score and Recovery Tracking
A new readiness experience analyses recent exercise, vital signs and sleep information to estimate how prepared the wearer is for physical activity.
The readiness score is calculated each morning and can change throughout the day. A lower score may suggest that additional recovery would be helpful, while a higher score may indicate that the wearer is ready for a more demanding workout.
More frequent HRV readings allow both watches to provide additional information about stress and recovery. However, users should look at long-term personal trends instead of comparing their HRV numbers directly with those of other people.
Sleep Score and Health Insights
Apple’s sleep score considers factors such as total sleep duration, bedtime consistency, interruptions and time spent in different sleep stages. The watch presents a score and classification each morning to help users understand their sleep quality.
Apple is also preparing a redesigned Health app with Apple Intelligence features. It will include personalised insights and a Health Age measurement based on information such as sleep, heart-rate variability and cardiovascular fitness.
Some redesigned Health app features are scheduled to arrive later in 2026 and may not be available immediately when the watches are released.
Siri AI and Audio Intelligence
Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 support the new Siri AI experience. Users can have more natural conversations, request current information and ask for assistance based on personal context from supported Apple services.
Both watches also introduce Audio Intelligence features powered by the S11 chip. Planned capabilities include:
Live Rewind: Transcribes the previous 15 seconds when the user misses something that was said.

Apple Watch Series 12 Battery Life
Apple Watch Series 12 provides up to 24 hours of normal use or up to 38 hours in Low Power Mode.
Fast charging can take the battery from zero to approximately 80 percent in about 30 minutes. A 15-minute charge can provide up to 12 additional hours of use.
This improvement should make Series 12 easier to use for daytime activity and overnight sleep tracking. However, most users will still need to charge it daily or every other day, depending on their settings and workout habits.
Apple Watch Ultra 4 Battery Life
Battery life is one of the biggest advantages of the Apple Watch Ultra 4. It provides:

Both watches can track common activities such as running, cycling, swimming, strength training, yoga, hiking and high-intensity interval training.
They also support advanced running features, including Custom Workouts, Pacer, Race Route and Automatic Track Detection. Workout Buddy can provide personalised encouragement and updates based on pace, distance and progress.
Series 12 is more than capable for everyday exercise and recreational athletes. Ultra 4 adds hardware and tracking features aimed at endurance athletes and people training in more demanding environments.
Ultra 4 GPS and Outdoor Navigation
Apple Watch Ultra 4 uses precision dual-frequency GPS, while Series 12 uses precision L1 GPS. Dual-frequency tracking can improve location accuracy in cities, forests, valleys and other environments where buildings or natural obstacles may interfere with satellite signals.
Ultra 4 is therefore better suited to trail running, hiking, cycling and long-distance events. Its larger display also makes maps and navigation information easier to read while moving.
The customizable Action button provides quick access to workouts, compass waypoints, backtracking and other outdoor functions without navigating through menus.
Satellite Communication on Apple Watch Ultra 4
Apple Watch Ultra 4 can connect directly to satellites when cellular and Wi-Fi networks are unavailable. Supported functions include:

Location sharing through Find My
This can provide an additional layer of safety while hiking, camping or travelling through remote areas. Satellite availability depends on the country, location and surrounding environment.
Apple Watch Series 12 does not include direct satellite communication.
Water Resistance and Diving
Apple Watch Series 12 is water resistant to 50 metres and includes a depth gauge that works down to 6 metres. It can be used for swimming and recreational snorkelling but is not designed for scuba diving.
Apple Watch Ultra 4 is water resistant to 100 metres and includes a depth gauge and water-temperature sensor. It supports recreational scuba diving to a depth of 40 metres when used with a compatible dive-computer application.
The Ultra 4 is also designed for high-speed water sports. Divers should always follow the safety instructions provided by Apple and their chosen dive application.
Safety and Emergency Features
Both watches include Emergency SOS, Fall Detection, Crash Detection and international emergency calling. If the watch detects a serious fall or vehicle collision, it can attempt to contact emergency services and notify designated contacts.
Apple Watch Ultra 4 adds a powerful emergency siren that Apple says can be heard from up to 180 metres away. It also benefits from satellite communication when conventional networks are unavailable.
These functions can provide valuable assistance, but they should not be considered guaranteed replacements for dedicated emergency and navigation equipment during dangerous activities.
Compatibility Requirements
Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 require an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 27 or later. They are not compatible with Android smartphones.
Some functions require an Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone, internet access or an active cellular plan. Feature availability can also vary by language and region.

Apple Watch Series 12 is the better choice for most people. It provides the same S11 processor, core health sensors, Siri AI features and essential fitness tracking as the Ultra 4 at half the starting price.

Is It Worth Upgrading?

However, owners of a recent Apple Watch who are satisfied with its battery life and health tracking may not need to upgrade immediately. Some of the software improvements may also become available on earlier supported models through watchOS 27.
