iPhone Duo: Apple foldable is finally here

Apple will sell the foldable iPhone in four storage capacities:

Prices outside the United States will vary because of local taxes, import costs and currency differences. Buyers should therefore check their regional Apple Store before placing an order.

The high starting price makes it clear that Apple is positioning the Duo as an ultra-premium device. It is likely to appeal most strongly to early adopters, business users and customers who want an iPhone and a tablet-like screen in one product.

iPhone Duo Specifications at a Glance

A Passport-Style Folding Design

Unlike flip phones that fold vertically into a smaller square, the iPhone Duo uses a book-style or passport-style design. When closed, it works like a compact smartphone. When opened, its two sides form a single 7.6-inch display.

Apple has developed a precision hinge containing more than 100 components. It supports the centre of the screen when the phone is open and uses magnets to keep the device securely closed. The frame is made from grade 5 titanium, while a three-dimensionally printed titanium cover protects the hinge.

Durability is always a major concern with a foldable phone, particularly around the hinge and flexible screen. Apple says the inner display uses a custom polymer cover with improved stiffness, scratch-resistant treatment, high-strength glass layers and a titanium support plate. The exterior screen is protected by Ceramic Shield 2.

The iPhone Duo also carries an IP68 water- and dust-resistance rating. Nevertheless, the flexible inner screen will probably require more careful handling than the conventional glass display found on a standard iPhone.

Two Super Retina XDR Displays

The exterior of the iPhone Duo has a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR display. It is intended for quick, one-handed tasks such as checking messages, answering calls, taking photographs and using navigation.

Opening the phone reveals its main attraction: a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR inner display. According to Apple, the interior screen is approximately 50 percent larger than the display on the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

The inner screen has a nano-texture finish designed to reduce glare and make the folding crease less noticeable. Apple has also placed a FaceTime camera beneath the display, helping create a largely uninterrupted viewing area.

Because both screens have the same aspect ratio, apps and other content can resize proportionally as users move between the exterior and interior displays.

iOS 27 Brings Multitasking to the iPhone

Hardware is only one part of the foldable experience. Apple has adapted iOS 27 so that apps, menus and controls respond to the position of the iPhone Duo.

When the device is fully open, users can run two applications side by side with Split View. It is also possible to open two windows from the same application—for example, two Safari windows for comparing products—or save frequently used app combinations for faster access.

This larger workspace could be useful for tasks such as:

Apple has optimized its own applications for the larger display. Third-party developers can also update their apps for the folding interface, and companies including Netflix, Zoom and Slack are already adapting their software.

The phone can be positioned partially open on a flat surface, allowing one half to act as a base. This arrangement is useful for hands-free video calls, photography, watching content and using the expanded StandBy mode.

A20 Pro Performance and Improved Cooling

The iPhone Duo foldable is powered by Apple’s A20 Pro processor, the same chip used in the iPhone 18 Pro series. The processor is manufactured using a 2-nanometre process and includes a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU and dual 16-core Neural Engine.

Apple claims the A20 Pro offers faster CPU and graphics performance than the previous generation, along with additional memory bandwidth for artificial intelligence and multitasking.

A custom vapour chamber helps manage heat during demanding activities such as gaming, video processing and running two apps simultaneously. This cooling system is particularly important in a thin foldable phone, where there is less internal space for heat dissipation.

The device also includes Apple’s N1 wireless chip and C2 cellular modem. Its connectivity features include Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread. The iPhone Duo uses eSIM exclusively worldwide, so it does not have a physical SIM-card slot.

Dual-Battery System and Charging

Apple has placed one battery in each half of the iPhone Duo. The two batteries work together as a single power system, helping the company use the limited internal space more efficiently.

Apple’s official battery estimates include:

• Up to 44 hours of video playback using the outer display
 
• Up to 24 hours of mixed use across both displays

Wired fast charging can bring the battery to approximately 50 percent in around 20 minutes with a compatible power adapter. MagSafe or Qi2 wireless charging can reach approximately 50 percent in around 30 minutes under suitable conditions.

Real-world battery life will depend on display brightness, network conditions, apps and how frequently the larger inner display is used.

iPhone Duo Camera System

The iPhone Duo has a 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera with sensor-shift optical image stabilization. It can capture images at up to 48MP and provides an optical-quality 2x zoom option.

A second 48-megapixel Fusion Ultra Wide camera supports wide-angle and macro photography. The main camera can record 4K Dolby Vision video at up to 120 frames per second.

Apple has also used the two-screen design to introduce several unusual camera features. Duo Preview displays a live camera view on the exterior screen, allowing the person being photographed to check the framing. Users can also take higher-quality selfies with the rear cameras while using the outer screen as a viewfinder.

Other features include Smart Take, which uses on-device intelligence to recognize when subjects are ready and capture a photograph automatically, and Kid Cue, which shows animated Peanuts characters on the outside screen to help attract a child’s attention.

The partially folded design can serve as its own stand, reducing the need for a tripod during group photographs, time-lapse videos and video calls.

Touch ID Returns on the iPhone Duo

Instead of relying only on Face ID, Apple has integrated Touch ID into the side button. This placement allows fingerprint authentication to work whether the phone is open, closed or resting on a surface.

The return of Touch ID should make unlocking the device and approving purchases more convenient in situations where the under-display camera does not have a clear view of the user. Owners can also unlock the iPhone Duo through a compatible Apple Watch.

A dedicated Camera Control remains available for opening and operating the camera quickly.

Apple Intelligence and Siri AI

The iPhone Duo supports Apple Intelligence and the new Siri AI experience included with iOS 27. Siri can use information from supported messages, emails, photographs and on-screen content to provide more context-aware assistance.

The large inner display makes it possible to keep Siri visible on one side while working in another application. Apple has also introduced a dedicated Siri app where users can continue conversations and review previous interactions.

Apple Intelligence provides additional image-editing features, including improved Clean Up, Spatial Reframing and Extend tools. Apple says many tasks are processed on the device, while more demanding requests can use its Private Cloud Compute system.

Some AI functions will initially be available only in selected languages and regions, so buyers should check feature availability in their country.
