Windows 11 Will Finally Let Users Move and Resize the Taskbar
Remember when Windows 11 launched and everyone collectively groaned about the rigid, unmovable taskbar? It felt like a step backward, forcing us into awkward registry hacks or third-party apps just to get basic customization. Well, good news, HackYourLife readers! Microsoft, clearly on an "apology tour" after some serious user feedback, is finally giving us what we’ve been asking for. After letting us delay Windows updates longer, they're now rolling out native controls for your taskbar and Start menu.
Your Taskbar, Your Rules (Finally!)
The biggest sigh of relief comes from the taskbar itself. No longer chained to the bottom of your screen, you can finally move it to the top, left, or right edge of your display. The content will intelligently adapt, and you'll even have options for icon alignment – choose top/center for side-mounted taskbars, or left/center for top/bottom.
But wait, there’s more! If you're a multi-tasking pro who docks your taskbar vertically, you'll love the new "Never combine" taskbar buttons. This means you can finally see full labels for all open windows, even from the same app. No more guessing which Excel sheet is which! To access these game-changing options, head to Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors.
Got a tablet or a smaller laptop screen? Microsoft's got you covered with an option to make the taskbar itself smaller, scaling down icons automatically. Just toggle "Show smaller taskbar buttons" to Always in the same Taskbar behaviors settings.
Taming the Start Menu Bloat
The Windows 11 Start menu has often felt like an overstuffed junk drawer, full of recommendations and unnecessary shortcuts. Thankfully, Microsoft is making it easier to streamline your experience. You'll soon find consolidated settings that let you customize the Start menu to your liking.
Expect granular control over showing or hiding sections like "Pinned," "Recommended," and "All apps" independently. If you just want your pinned apps and nothing else, you can make that happen! There's even a separate toggle to disable only the "Recommended" section, decluttering without losing other useful info. Plus, you’ll be able to set a specific Small or Large size for the Start menu, preventing it from awkwardly resizing across different monitors. For an extra dash of privacy, an option to hide your name and profile picture is also on the way.
These updates are currently hitting Windows Insider members in the Experimental channel, so regular users might have to wait a little longer. But the wait will be worth it. Get ready to truly hack your Windows 11 experience!
