How to Hide Sensitive Info From Your Notifications
Heads up, privacy fans: A recent FBI investigation revealed a startling fact. They were able to extract deleted Signal messages from a defendant's iPhone – not from the app itself, but from the phone's hidden push notification database. Yes, your device is likely keeping a secret log of every notification you receive, even if you clear them or delete the app.
This isn't some brand-new exploit. Back in 2018, the Objective See Foundation highlighted how macOS records anything displayed in its Notification Center, including "disappearing" Signal messages. It seems iOS (and potentially other platforms) uses a similar, less-known system to store these notification tidbits. The takeaway? Your digital alerts, even the fleeting ones, might be leaving a permanent trail.
While completely turning off notifications would prevent this data collection, that's hardly practical. We need our alerts! The good news is you can protect yourself by preventing your device from displaying the contents of sensitive messages in notifications. Instead of "Pranay Parab: My Netflix password is Lifehacker," you'll simply see "You have a new message." This simple change dramatically reduces the information stored in that hidden database.
Here’s how to do it across your devices:
Protect Sensitive Notifications on an iPhone
Your iPhone lets you hide notification content globally or per-app. Go to Settings > Notifications > Show Previews and select Never. This will hide all previews. To customize for specific apps, go to Settings > Notifications, tap an app, then select Show Previews > Never. Repeat for every sensitive app.
Remove Information from the Notification Database on a Mac
Similar to iPhone, you can hide previews on your Mac. Head to System Settings > Notifications. Click the drop-down next to Show previews and select Never. For individual apps, scroll down, select the app, and set Show previews > Never.
Want to purge existing notification data? The Objective See Foundation developed a free app called AuRevoir. Download it, and you can View Msgs to see what's stored, then Remove Msgs to clear your Mac's notification database.
Keep Sensitive Information Out of Android's Notifications
Android's options for hiding previews vary by device due to manufacturer customizations. For lock screen privacy, go to Settings > Notifications > Notifications on lock screen and toggle off Show sensitive content. You might also find options to hide silent notifications. For more granular control, delve into Settings > Notifications > App notifications and explore settings for individual apps. You'll likely find it easier to control previews directly within each app's settings.
Clear Notification Information in Windows
Windows doesn't have a global "hide all previews" setting, but you can manage lock screen notifications. Open Settings > System > Notifications > Notifications. Disable Show notifications on the lock screen. Then, scroll down and for each sensitive app, enable Hide content when notifications are on lock screen. For broader privacy, you’ll need to adjust settings within individual apps.
Hide Sensitive Content from Notifications in Popular Messaging Apps
Many messaging apps offer their own notification preview settings, which can be even more effective:
- WhatsApp: In app settings, tap Notifications and disable Show preview.
- Signal: Tap your profile icon, go to Settings > Notifications. Under "Notification Content," select No Name or Content.
- Telegram: Go to Notifications and Sounds > Private Chats and disable Message Preview. Do the same for Group Chats.
Taking these steps can significantly tighten your digital privacy, ensuring your sensitive conversations don't leave a hidden trail in your device's notification logs. Stay safe out there!
