Apple AirPods 5 Review: Two Models, Better ANC, and Features

Apple has introduced AirPods 5, the latest generation of its popular open-ear wireless earbuds. The new model brings improved Active Noise Cancellation, redesigned acoustic components, Live Translation, Siri AI and better protection against dust, sweat and water.

For the first time, Active Noise Cancellation is included with both versions of the standard AirPods. Customers can choose between the regular AirPods 5 with a USB-C Charging Case and a more expensive version with a Wireless Charging Case, longer battery life and touch-based volume control.

Here is everything you need to know about the AirPods 5 release date, price, specifications and new features.

AirPods 5 Release Date

AirPods 5 will become available on September 18, 2026. Customers can place their orders before the official release through Apple’s online store.

Availability may vary between countries and retailers. Buyers should check their regional Apple Store for local delivery dates and pricing.

The release information and product specifications are available on Apple’s official AirPods 5 page.

AirPods 5 Price

Apple offers AirPods 5 in two versions:

  • AirPods 5 with USB-C Charging Case:
    29
  •
  • AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case:
    49

Both versions include Active Noise Cancellation, Adaptive Audio, Transparency mode, Personalized Spatial Audio, Live Translation and the H2 headphone chip.

The

49 model adds a Wireless Charging Case, volume-swipe controls, a built-in case speaker for Find My and slightly longer battery life. Regional prices may differ because of taxes, import charges and currency conversion.

Active Noise Cancellation Comes to Both Models

One of the biggest changes is that both AirPods 5 models include Active Noise Cancellation. Buyers no longer need to select a separate ANC version to access the feature.

Apple says the new system provides up to 1.5 times more Active Noise Cancellation than AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation. The earbuds use computational audio, microphones and a redesigned acoustic structure to reduce background noise.

Because AirPods 5 retain an open-ear design without silicone tips, they will not create the same physical seal as AirPods Pro. This design may feel more comfortable for users who dislike in-ear tips, although AirPods Pro 3 should still provide stronger overall noise isolation.

AirPods 5 also include several intelligent listening modes:

  • Transparency mode allows outside sounds to remain audible.
  •
  • Adaptive Audio automatically blends noise cancellation and Transparency based on the surrounding environment.
  •
  • Conversation Awareness lowers the media volume when the wearer begins speaking.

These features allow the earbuds to adapt as the user moves between quiet rooms, busy streets, public transport and conversations.

Redesigned Sound and Adaptive EQ

Apple has redesigned the internal acoustic architecture of AirPods 5 to produce greater depth, clarity and detail. The earbuds contain a custom high-excursion Apple driver and a custom high-dynamic-range amplifier.

Next-generation Adaptive EQ uses an inward-facing microphone to monitor the sound reaching the listener’s ears. It then adjusts different frequencies in real time according to the fit and shape of the wearer’s ears.

The goal is to provide more consistent audio without requiring users to create their own equalizer settings. Actual sound quality and bass response will still depend on how securely the open-ear design fits each person.

Personalized Spatial Audio

AirPods 5 support Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking. This technology creates a three-dimensional listening experience by positioning sounds around the listener.

When watching a supported film or television programme, dialogue can appear to remain connected to the screen while other sounds are placed around the listener. Spatial Audio is also available with compatible music and games.

Users can create a personalised audio profile with a compatible iPhone. This profile accounts for the shape of their head and ears when adjusting the Spatial Audio experience.

Live Translation Through AirPods 5

Live Translation is one of the most interesting AirPods 5 features. When paired with a compatible Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone, the earbuds can translate supported spoken languages into the wearer’s preferred language.

The feature could be useful during travel, international business meetings or conversations with someone who speaks another language. Supported languages initially include:

  • Chinese Mandarin, Simplified and Traditional
  •
  • English, UK and US
  •
  • French
  •
  • German
  •
  • Italian
  •
  • Japanese
  •
  • Korean
  •
  • Portuguese
  •
  • Spanish

Live Translation requires a supported iPhone and may not be available in every country or region. Language availability is also expected to expand over time.

Siri AI and Hands-Free Assistance

AirPods 5 provide hands-free access to Apple’s new Siri AI experience through a compatible iPhone. Users can ask more open-ended questions, brainstorm ideas and continue longer conversations without taking their phone out of a pocket or bag.

Traditional Siri functions remain available, including playing music, making calls, sending messages, setting reminders and requesting directions.

The earbuds also support Siri Interactions. When Siri announces a call or notification, the wearer can nod to respond positively or gently shake their head to decline. Siri AI is initially rolling out in English, and some features may be subject to usage limits.

Improved Call Quality and Audio Recording

Each AirPod has dual beamforming microphones, an inward-facing microphone and a speech-detecting accelerometer. Voice Isolation uses computational audio to reduce environmental noise and make the wearer’s voice easier to understand during calls.

This can be particularly helpful when making calls outdoors or in windy and crowded environments.

AirPods 5 also support studio-quality audio recording. This feature is intended to produce clearer recordings for voice notes, interviews, videos, podcasts and other content recorded through supported Apple devices.

Controls and Volume Adjustment

Both versions of AirPods 5 use force sensors in their stems. Users can control playback and calls by pressing the sensor:

  • Press once to play or pause audio.
  •
  • Press once to answer a call or mute the microphone.
  •
  • Press twice to end a call or skip forward.
  •
  • Press three times to return to the previous track.
  •
  • Press and hold to change listening modes.

Both models can also work as a remote control for the camera on a compatible Apple device.

Only the AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case include volume-swipe control. Owners of this model can swipe up or down on the stem to change the volume without using their iPhone, Apple Watch or Siri.

AirPods 5 Battery Life

Battery performance depends on which AirPods 5 version you choose.

Standard AirPods 5

  • Up to 4 hours on one charge with Active Noise Cancellation
  •
  • Up to 20 hours with the USB-C Charging Case
  •
  • Approximately one hour of listening after five minutes in the case

AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case

  • Up to 5 hours on one charge with Active Noise Cancellation
  •
  • Up to 22 hours with the Wireless Charging Case
  •
  • Approximately one hour of listening after five minutes in the case

The more expensive version therefore provides approximately one additional hour per earbud charge and two additional hours when the case is included.

USB-C and Wireless Charging

Both AirPods 5 cases have a USB-C port. However, Apple does not include a USB-C charging cable or power adapter in the box, so buyers will need to use an existing compatible cable or purchase one separately.

The regular

29 model can only be charged through its USB-C connector. The
49 Wireless Charging Case supports USB-C as well as Qi-certified wireless chargers and Apple Watch magnetic chargers.

The Wireless Charging Case also contains a speaker that can play a sound through the Find My app. This makes the case easier to locate when it is hidden beneath furniture or left somewhere nearby.

Improved IP57 Water and Dust Resistance

AirPods 5 and their charging cases have an IP57 resistance rating. This provides protection against dust, sweat and accidental exposure to water, making the earbuds suitable for workouts and everyday outdoor use.

Water resistance does not make AirPods 5 completely waterproof. They should not be used while swimming or intentionally submerged. Resistance can also decrease as the earbuds age and experience normal wear.

Instant Pairing and Automatic Switching

AirPods 5 retain the simple connection process associated with Apple’s wireless earbuds. Placing them near an unlocked iPhone or iPad displays an on-screen connection prompt.

Once connected to an Apple Account, the earbuds can work across compatible Apple devices, including the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV and Apple Vision Pro.

Automatic switching allows the earbuds to move between devices when needed. For example, someone listening to music on a Mac can answer an incoming iPhone call without manually changing the Bluetooth connection.

Optical sensors detect when the AirPods are removed from the ears and can pause playback automatically.

AirPods 5 or AirPods Pro 3: Which Should You Buy?

AirPods 5 are designed for people who prefer earbuds that sit in the ear without silicone tips. They are also significantly less expensive than AirPods Pro 3 while still providing Active Noise Cancellation, Adaptive Audio, Spatial Audio and Live Translation.

AirPods Pro 3 remain the more advanced choice for buyers who want stronger noise cancellation, a sealed in-ear fit and health-related features such as hearing assistance and heart-rate sensing during workouts.

Choose AirPods 5 if you:

  • Prefer an open-ear design without silicone tips
  •
  • Want Apple features at a lower price
  •
  • Need moderate Active Noise Cancellation
  •
  • Want Live Translation and Siri AI
  •
  • Already use several Apple devices

Consider AirPods Pro 3 if you prioritise maximum noise isolation, longer listening time or Apple’s hearing and fitness features.

Which AirPods 5 Version Offers Better Value?

For most buyers, the AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case are likely to offer better long-term value. The price difference is only article0, but the upgraded model provides wireless charging, volume-swipe controls, longer battery life and a Find My speaker built into the case.

The standard

29 version remains a good option for customers who charge exclusively through USB-C and do not need volume controls on the earbuds. Importantly, it still includes the same H2 processor, sound technology and Active Noise Cancellation as the more expensive model.

Final Thoughts

AirPods 5 deliver meaningful improvements without abandoning the familiar open-ear design. Active Noise Cancellation is now standard across both versions, while redesigned acoustics and Adaptive EQ promise richer and more detailed sound.

Features such as Live Translation, Siri AI, Personalized Spatial Audio, improved Voice Isolation and IP57 resistance make the new earbuds more useful for travel, work, exercise and everyday listening.

The

29 starting price is attractive for users who want the essential AirPods experience. However, the
49 Wireless Charging Case version is the stronger overall package because it adds convenient volume controls, flexible charging, longer battery life and better Find My support for a relatively small additional cost.
